Is Your Communication Style Helping or Hurting Your Business

Six weeks ago, I began working with a client I’ve known for 18 years. Since our last project, his business has grown significantly and become much more high-tech.

They brought on an operations person who’s automating many business processes using AI. Well, I thought I knew a lot about AI. Um, yeah, I’ve got much to learn.

It’s been interesting stepping back and paying more attention to what I’m noticing while working with him.

It got me thinking about what it’s like working with a detailed communicator vs. a concise communicator.

I find myself somewhat in between. I don’t think one is better than the other. In fact, I think it’s more situational. Sometimes, you need lots of detail, and other times, you just need a quick summary.

Then when I started digging into their marketing, I noticed this again.

Yet, most of their calls to action to get people to take a first, second, or next step were almost too concise and unclear.

One of my talents is looking at someone’s online dream client journey from optin to upsell and anything in between through your dream client’s eyes, feelings, mindset, and more.

What I noticed was in a lot of their emails and web pages, it wasn’t as clear “what” the dream client needed to do next. Some of the pages and the emails left more to chance.

This is REALLY important to notice. In situations like these, where you’re counting on an email or web page to do all your communicating, you can’t worry about overcommunicating or saying something more than once.

People’s eyeballs go all over the place. You have your skimmers like me, and you have folks who read every word. So you need to be prepared for both.

Let your web pages and emails do the HEAVY lifting for you. Don’t be afraid to give more details, and do it more than once on the page or email. The sweet spot if you’re sending an offer is to have it in the email or on the page at least 3 times. You can have it on web pages 6 or more times.

Don’t fall into the trap that being a detailed (or over) communicator is a bad thing. It’s definitely not. The more you can communicate and leave nothing to chance, the better.

And if you can, have a phone number on your pages and in your emails so people can call for help. Or, at the least, have an email address that someone monitors.

There are times when you need to be concise, say what you need to say, and then get out of there, such as after you’ve sent a bunch of emails with your offer. And there are other times when over-explaining really works. Especially if your offer is more complicated.

Just pay attention to your copy and your graphics on your pages and emails. More is more and less is definitely less.

When you’ve completed a sales or offer page, have someone else look at it, especially someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about your business. You want them to read it from your dream client’s perspective and give you feedback. See if you missed anything or if it needs to be clearer.

Key Take Aways:
1. Know Your Audience – Do they know a lot about your business and core focus? This will help you tailor your copy and messaging accordingly.

2. Don’t be Afraid to Be RepetitiveEnsure your calls to action are clear and repeated at least three times in emails and six or more times on web pages.

3. Use Multiple Touch Points – Include different ways  to contact you, phone, email, or chatbot.

4. Brevity v. Detail – Think about using more detailed communication when introducing your complex offers, and you can do more concise summaries when you’re following up. Yet, I’d always keep your sales page with as much detail as you can. Always include FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) at the bottom.

5. Ask for Feedback (Phone a Friend 🙂 – Ask a friend or colleague to review your page(s) or emails to ensure it’s clear and effective. (Or you can reach out to me. 🙂

If you ever want another set of eyeballs on your pages or emails, I’m here for you. Send me your link(s). I’m happy to give you a 15 minute critique as a gift, no strings attached. 🙂

Paragraph I’m Pondering

“The superheroes you have in your mind (idols, icons, titans, billionaires, etc,) are nearly all walking flaws who have maximized one or two strengths. Humans are imperfect creatures. You don’t succeed because you have no weaknesses; you succeed because you find your unique strengths and focus on developing habits around them.” ~ Tim Ferris, Tools of Titans: Tactics, Routines, And Habits of Billionaires, Icons, and World-Class Performers.

Powerful Affirmations to Inspire

  • “My family is a source of love, support, and joy, and we thrive together in harmony.”
  • “I am a magnet for financial abundance, and prosperity flows effortlessly into my life.”
  • “I am energized and filled with positive energy, radiating health and well-being.”
