Is “Seasonal” Procrastination Really a Thing?

Yep, it’s officially fall, it’s already raining, and it’s much colder in the mornings. You know that feeling when you wake up and it’s still dark outside and you just want to stay all curled up comfy in your bed?

Yeah, I’ve been doing my best to get up, put on my warmer gear, and go out walking to get my steps in for the day. Why does it feel so much harder to walk in the dark than when it’s light outside?

There is one good thing: I can hear the owls talking to each other as I’m walking. I just love that.

So this week, I was talking to a client who’s been really busy with her full-time work and hasn’t had time to grow her business.

When she said that, I smiled cuz I know that story. I’ve told myself more times than I can count.

Does that ever happen to you? You get really busy with your current clients, or just busy with life, and that to-do list of things you wanted to get accomplished for the day just keeps getting longer and longer. And the days keep getting shorter and shorter…

Soon enough, all the stuff you wanted to do gets pushed off to another day, another week, month…

Yep, guilty.

What is it about us that we do that? Hmmmm… Is “seasonal procrastination really a thing?” 😉

So I did some research, you know me, always something more to learn. And when I dug deeper, it’s honestly about fear, which could leave to procrastination. And yeah, fall, heading into the holidays, that’s when you might see it most.

Sure, it could disguise itself as “I’m too busy with my clients to stop and reach out to get new ones.” Or, “I don’t have time to create and post on social media…” And on and on that “procrastination merry-go-round” goes.

This fear also shows up as too many ideas, feeling the pressure, and lots on your plate. And one thing you need to know, I GET IT, and I’ve definitely been there too.

What’s interesting is how easy it is to show up for others and pour our energy into helping them and their projects.

Yet, we avoid showing up for ourselves… It’s about quietly avoiding our own visibility. It feels much safer to work for others than to get out there and promote ourselves.

It’s so much safer to stay hidden. Cuz the moment we decide to be seen, that fear starts up again. It’s happened to me, that voice that says, “What if no one cares? What if it’s not good enough? What if no one buys my product, or worse, no one even comments on any of my social media posts?

Yeah, that’s fear talking again, convincing you that you’re behind on posting, building your business while everyone else seems to be doing it effortlessly. And getting lots of comments too.

That brings me to this question—

What if that’s not true? Maybe it’s simply that you’re in a different season right now?

My client wasn’t sure where to start cuz not having time and feeling overwhelmed is real. That’s when I suggested she ditch the plan.

And let’s not make this about time. Instead, let’s make it about focused attention.

Below is the process I walked her through. It’s just one small shift that gets you moving again.

The 15-Minute Focused Practice

  1. Ditch the plan. Create Simplicity Around One Thing
You don’t need a big system or a perfect schedule to do this. Just fifteen minutes of focused attention on one thing. For example, my client wants to reach out to colleagues to reconnect, stir up some energy, and maybe even get some referrals. Maybe you need to respond to some emails, or start on your weekly blog…
  2. Set a timer for 15 minutes of Inspired Action No Matter How You Feel.
For example, my client would start reaching out. Sending a quick text, message, or voice note. No agenda. Just a real connection.
  3. Take One Action On It.
For my client, she wrote down 5–10 people she genuinely would love to reconnect with in the next ten days. People you want to check in with, to see what they’re creating, what they’re excited about, or how life is unfolding for them.
  4. When the timer goes off, pause.
Check in with yourself. How do you feel? Done for now? Great. Want to keep going? Then do it. Either way, you’ve moved energy.

Research studies have shown that this theory of 15 minutes a day, no more or less, works. It’s a way to get past your procrastination, aka fear. No matter how you’re feeling, just do it for 15 minutes. And it’s powerful when it focuses on changing behaviors that keep you stuck or that create certain moods

The secret is, when I first started doing this, I got so into my project (I was writing my Soulful Marketing Manifesto eGuide), that I ended up working for a couple of hours. And other days, I just stuck to 15 minutes….

What’s interesting when looking at our behavior, momentum rarely comes from a plan. Sure, you may need one to get started… Yet the real truth is, it comes from a change in behavior due to a single moment, an email, a conversation, or something else.

And remember, you’re not behind; maybe you’re just in a different season of your business/life. Trust in divine timing.

So if you’re feeling behind, know you’re not missing your moment. You’re exactly where you need to be. Just try the 15-minute Focused Practice and see how it can change your behavior.

If this hit home for you, hit reply, let me know, hands at your back. 🙂

Paragraph I’m Pondering

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Powerful Affirmations to Inspire

  • “My business is a divine expression of my purpose, and it flourishes every day.”
  • “I deserve to be well paid for doing what I love.”
  • “I am committed, focused, and resilient; my success is inevitable.”

Weekly Photos

I had a little field trip last weekend, drove down to Barnes & Noble in Walnut Creek, outside of San Francisco. I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m in Bernadette Jiwa’s Story Republic Writing Group, and they had a book signing for their book, What is Love. I joined the writing group in January this year, so they published the book before I got here. And, I still wanted to be there for the book signing. The most fun was meeting IRL all the folks I’ve been writing stories with for the past 10 months. We laughed and connected; it was the best medicine. Plus, we had a late-night dinner and lots of storytelling happening.

  1. This was not the best photo, you know, I’m driving the car and just had to see if I could get the shot at 70 mph. There’s some reflection, yet you can really see the mountain, the clouds of the cascades, as I drove south.
  2. There’s ole Emma in her favorite spot. She loved this time of year, wrapped in a cozy blanket. Oh, do I miss our fall hikes together.
  3. Here’s Enrika and me, hanging out at the book signing. It’s just so amazing to meet the folks you’ve been writing your hearts out with…
  4. This is Rumi and I, with the book. Rumi, the editor of the book, came down from Seattle to be here.
  5. There are those fall sunrises that just want to make you curl up on the couch with a coffee and a blanket and watch it come up.
  6. Here’s a quote wall. I LOVE this! It was a whole wall, so I only got a part of it. This was our host’s house for dinner and the afterparty, where we all shared stories about what the word “Together” means to us.
  7. Yeah, there’s nothing like the mountains and desert of Southern CA, yep, took this out of the car going about 70 mph 🙂
