Recognizing and Feeling The Quiet In Business and In Life

What’s the energy I’m bringing into this writing today as I sit down to write? I’m curious. I’m also a little tender.

I’m sitting here at my old banker’s desk, the one I’ve written from for the past ten years, and I start listening.

The first sound I hear is the slow creak of the overhead fan making its full circle, trying its best to cool down my office.

You might have your own version of this too, a sound you listen to like the ping when an email from a client pops into your inbox, or the ding of a text that brings in a referral. Or resounding laughter from a Zoom call with a client where you truly connect…

Then the bubbling and churning of the fountain outside. After my morning walk, I watered a few plants because today was going to be a scorcher — 109 degrees.

I realized if I was already dragging the hose out, I might as well fill the fountain, too. I haven’t done it all summer. I do enjoy seeing and hearing it from my office window as the water gurgles and churns as the water falls.

At times like this, I love looking outside as the drops shimmer in the morning sun, hearing them trickle their way down slowly.

My eyes come back to my desk, and I find myself closing them and listening for THAT sound. The one that’s not there. I listen for it more each day, almost a reflex now.

Maybe you have your experience about being in the present moment, whether it’s the exercise I’m doing: paying attention to sounds and thoughts in the moment. or something else

This is also something you can do in your business: listen to what you might feel is missing in your business or maybe your life right now. What sound or feeling do you want to feel or hear?

Back to what I hear, I listen for this specific sound more than I’d like to admit, almost out of habit. And every time I do, I’m reminded: I will never hear that sound again.

That’s the sound of my 11-year-old pup, Emma. Her breathing, yawning, and stretching. The gentle hop off the overstuffed chair, the clickety-click of her nails on the hardwood as she ventured off to patrol her “Emma TV” perch in the living room window. The excited bark when the doorbell rang.

It’s the absence of that sound… my heart ached to hear it again, to know that she is still here.

Then the knowing that that wasn’t going to happen. Oh, sadness is here. Now I’m curious….

What sound does sadness make?

And here’s what struck me this week: marketing can have a sound or that feeling, too. Both are about connection, and when the connection is gone, the silence feels heavy.

We get used to certain sounds in our businesses, the replies to our emails, the thank-yous from clients, the conversations that spark ideas, the sense that what we’re putting out into the world is landing. And when that “sound” disappears, we notice.

That’s where many mindful entrepreneurs get stuck. They keep doing all the “right” things, yet the response feels quieter than it used to. Or maybe it’s never been loud to begin with.

Here’s what I’ve discovered from both loss and business: the quiet can be your teacher.

When the noise dies down, you finally get to hear what’s underneath.

Maybe you’ve been marketing in a way that doesn’t align with your values. Or you’ve been so focused on doing more, posting more, selling more, that you haven’t been listening to what your dream clients actually need or want from you.

The quiet is where you can notice the gaps, the missing sounds, and the deeper truths.

In Soulful Marketing, it’s not about filling the silence with more noise. Simply listen and get curious. Start to reconnect with the heartbeat of your business — your why, values, and the people you most want to serve.

A Quiet Connection Practice to Try:

  • Get Still & Notice:  Find a moment today where you can let things go quiet. Maybe it’s sitting at your desk before you start your day, or on a walk when the world hasn’t fully woken up yet. Notice what feels missing in your connection with your business, your dream clients, or whatever else comes up for you.
  • Listen for the Absence of Sound or Feeling: Ask yourself what sound or feeling you want to hear or feel again.  Maybe it’s a real conversation that makes you lean in, a heartfelt thank-you from a client, or that simple spark of an idea that makes you smile before you’ve written it down. Let yourself linger with it for a moment.
  • Take One Small Step: Choose one small action you can take to invite that sound or feeling back. Not a tactic. Not something from a marketing checklist. Just one real way to reconnect with yourself and your dream clients: a note, a story, a check-in, something that feels natural and resonates with you.

The sound of Emma sadly isn’t here anymore. And yet, her absence has taught me something I needed to remember: the most important sounds in life and business aren’t the loudest ones. They’re the ones we hear when we turn all the “sound” off. And they’re rooted in presence, connection, and loving kindness.

That’s the kind of sound worth bringing back into your marketing and into your life. You’re creating a space where you’re building trust and creating connections with your dream clients. They want to feel seen, valued, and that they matter.

That’s why I started and continue to build my business, cuz connection matters. Sometimes it’s just about getting quiet and blocking out all the noise.

I’m always here for you, hands at your back.

And whenever you want more, check out the P.S. I’d love the opportunity to guide you.

Note: ChatGPT does NOT write these eNewsletters, a human does, ME. It helps me find links to good articles to check out. And it also occasionally edits my copy to tighten it up. Also, note that I started using “em-dashes” way before AI did. So, just cuz I may use them sometimes doesn’t mean AI has written my copy. I’d dare to say that’s one of the many reasons AI uses them, cuz all it’s learned is from us! 😉

Paragraph I’m Pondering

“This being human is a guest house. Every morning, a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and attend them all: Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.“

Weekly Photos

It’s not 3 weeks since we’ve said goodbye to Emma, yikes, time is screaming by. I have some choice shots to share and some otherworldly examples of energy and kindness.

  1. Full disclosure, ChatGPT 5 added this title to my photograph. It was helping me edit a post, and it asked me to upload a picture, and there you go. I couldn’t have done much better.
  2. Yeah, weird, right? Who takes pictures in their sink? Ummm, I do of course! Especially when I see this piece of a tomato that I swear looks like a heart. You can’t make this stuff up. Thank you, Univers.e 🙂
  3. One of my fav. pics of Emma. And I put it on my phone’s screensaver. Then this happened. So I took a pic of it. If you believe in Angel numbers, 4:44 is a sign you’re on the right path, with your angels beside you, offering love, guidance, and unwavering support.
  4. My absolute favorite stained glass that Alice made for me. I love this and her so much.
  5. Yep, I found a dime on my walk this past week. Signs for angels, my grandmother, and more. Lots are happening energetically in my world.
  6. Then this happened. I haven’t walked without a dog in 35 years. So it’s been a bit lonely. On my walk, I see this cat running towards me. So I stop. It immediately runs up to me and starts curling around my legs, and then saunters off. Long enough for me to snap this pic. Thanks for the cat hug.
  7. My favorite trail is the Sac River Trail. It was hard for me to go back there, as the last time I was on this trail was with Alice and Emma. And we didn’t know this, but this was her last walk and last swim. Since I’m all alone on my walks now, I’ve been trying to focus on things I love, like taking pics. I liked how the bridge frames the mountain.

NEWEST P.S. Sometimes the quiet means you’re closer than you think to a breakthrough.

If the quiet in your business has been louder than you’d like, maybe fewer replies, less connection, and feeling a bit stuck, you’re not alone. Most of the time, it’s not because you’re not working hard enough… It’s because you’re too close to see what’s missing.

That’s where I come in. In this one-off, 60-minute Clarity Into Action Call, we’ll uncover exactly where your connection with your dream clients has gone quiet, and together we’ll map out your next best step(s) that feel aligned, doable, and true to you.

My promise to you… When you bring me into your business for this hour, you’re getting my full attention, my years of experience, and my unshakable belief in what you’re building. I’ll listen deeply, ask the questions no one else is asking, and help you see what you can’t see on your own. I’ll stand with you in the messy middle, in the doubt, in the “is this even working?” moments — and I’ll help you find your way through with clarity and confidence. Plus, I will share any resources that will help you, many of which I use and have gathered for the past 19 years.
