What’s underneath your procrastination might surprise you…

Let me know if this sounds familiar cuz this was me this week:

“I don’t have a lot of calls this week, I’m going to get sooo much done!”

And now it’s Thursday, and I’m thinking, what happened… Sure, I’d love to blame it on the second week of January, I’m trying to get my stuff together, and a lot of balls are flying in the air…

So, I was dog-sitting for a friend this week for 12 hours.

Of course, I jumped at the chance cuz if I’m deeply honest, I really love having 4-legged company in the house.

In my head, I was thinking, piece of cake, the dog is well trained, and I’ll take her for a long walk, and I have no calls, so yeah, it will be a peaceful and productive day, right?

Yeah, you know where this is headed… She arrives at o dark thirty and immediately cuddles on my lap in my blanket as I’m still drinking my coffee and doing my morning pages.

The whole house felt different having a dog here again, that small, bouncy, cuddly energy.

Yet, what I didn’t realize is that Emma, my 11-year-old pup who died 6 months ago, having a dog in the house again, even just for a day, wasn’t just “cute and distracting.”

It was emotional, comforting, tender, and it was the kind of moment where your heart shows up first, and your to-do list comes second.

By the end of the day, no big surprise, I’d gotten way less accomplished than I’d planned.

My first instinct was to judge myself: “Why can’t I stay focused? What am I so beyond? I’m teaching this stuff and shouldn’t I be much better at getting things done?”

It was then that I caught myself because here’s the truth that I keep coming back to:

  • The plans you and I create are based on what we can see today.
  • And what shapes our behavior is usually based on what you and I can’t see.

That’s the real reason I am creating The Soulful Marketing Method. I’ve been sharing with you insights from these past two weeks.

It’s a systems thinking tool based on the Iceberg Method. It’s where surface-level “events” such as procrastination, distraction, avoidance, etc.) are only the visible part of your experience.

Underneath that are the patterns, structures, behaviors, and beliefs driving the whole picture.

Since I’m not into icebergs, and it felt a bit overused, I wanted to make it more relatable to folks like me. I reimagined the Iceberg as a Mountain for one simple reason:

I’m a hiker and LOVE being outside in the woods, climbing, walking, and seeing nature.

And when you’re climbing a mountain, there are things you can’t see, like the top of the mountain while you’re climbing it. You’re too busy navigating the next step… the switchback… the weather… the terrain that’s right in front of you.

So when you’re procrastinating or putting something off for tomorrow, the next day, or next week, it’s rarely just about the task. It’s about all the layers of the mountain that are buried deep.

You have to start looking under the surface beneath those layers because it’s about what you can’t see: your behavior and how you feel.

Sometimes it’s grief, fear, or perfectionism that’s trying to protect you. Or maybe it’s an old belief that says: “If I can’t do this perfectly, I need to keep revising it until I get it right, even if it takes months or years.”

The big “aha” moment is that instead of trying to force the task and chalk it up to laziness, you work with all you uncover underneath.

Also, what jumped out at me the most is that procrastination isn’t always resistance. This is where purpose matters because procrastination isn’t always resistance; sometimes it’s misalignment or fear sitting on top of something tender, or maybe you’ve lost your core purpose of why you’re trying to accomplish “the thing” in the first place.

When you start to name what’s under the surface, the next step gets smaller, safer, and strangely easier.

When that happens, it’s the moment you stop staring at the trail and start paying attention to the actual terrain.

And this is the learning: instead of muscling through the task, you work with what’s underneath it because that’s what’s actually driving your procrastination.

Here’s a simple way to do that in two minutes. I call it a Mountain Check In:

  1. What’s the surface task I’m avoiding?
  2. What feeling is underneath it?
  3. What belief is attached to that feeling?

Then pick one tiny move: 10 minutes only. Not to finish. Just to prove to your system that it’s safe to begin.

I’m still building the Soulful Mountain Method, and I want it to be practical, grounded, and actually supportive—not another thing you “should” do.

If you want to be notified when it’s ready, simply leave me a comment and say yes.

Until then, keep using the Mountain Check In. It’s small, and it’s powerful.

And with what’s happening around the world, if youre feeling a little lost about your purpose lately, you’re not failing, you’re human.

Come back to why you started your business, project, or whatever you’re working on that has you slowing down. Come back to who you’re here to help.

Paragraph I’m Pondering

“Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people can’t buy more hours. Scientists can’t invent new minutes. And you can’t save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time you’ve wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow.”
― Denis Waitley

Powerful Affirmations to Inspire

  • I confidently attract ideal opportunities, connections, and clients who align perfectly with my vision.”
  • “My mindset is positive, calm, and focused, enabling me to navigate life with confidence and ease.”
  • Success flows naturally to me because I am aligned with my highest purpose and potential.”

Weekly Photos

  1. This pic and the one next to it are a pair. I was walking down the trail and saw these two geese. I thought the setting looked kind of cool.
  2. Then, of course, I had to zoom in to check them out, and then I caught a bonus bird that was gonna dive into the water, no doubt trying to get a fish.
  3. No, we didn’t get a new dog yet. It still doesn’t feel like the right time yet. We have a friend who does 12 hr shifts and asked if we could watch her dog for her cuz she’s still a puppy and leaving her alone or in a crate that long isn’t feasible. Meet Ruby, she’s a 1-year-old mix of Cocker Spaniel, King Charles, and Poodle. She doesn’t shed and rarely barks. She’s like the perfect dog.
  4. We were changing the sheets on the bed, and Ruby decided she needed to try the comforter before we could finish. She has a muppet-like face, very cute, and so much hair. And a cuddle bug.
  5. I sat by this little mini water fall cuz of all the rain, lots of those popped up. I got this close-up of these bubbles in the water that the waterfall kept generating, and the rocks underneath had this interesting color.
  6. This Egret, I’ve seen it several times and haven’t been able to get this close to it. Until this week, I was so close; he actually moved, yet not far enough. You’ve got to be quick when it comes to taking pics of birds, or any animals. 🙂
  7. I end my walk from the trail, which always dumps me out at the bridge. Next to the bridge for the cars is the one for the train. I snapped this pic of the train going by, and below it is a view of Mt. Lassen and the surrounding mountains with their winter snow.
