When your Inner Chicken Little is running loose and trying to run the roost

I know I’ve been here more times in my life than I want to admit. 😊 You know when you get that call, text, or email that something happened. Maybe it’s a client who’s frustrated or has to let you go or needs you urgently. Or it’s a family member that’s in the hospital or a health scare…

Or lately for me, when I try not to read the news, and I end up catching a headline and start to go down that road to nowhere… You know the one…

That moment when your mind starts racing, your heart beats faster, you feel the anxiety build up in your chest, your arms, legs, and it’s hard to stay still. Then that voice, you know, the one in your head that I’m calling “Chicken Little,” starts squawking— “the sky is falling” and just won’t stop. It’s that nagging, fearful voice that insists everything is a big deal and if you don’t act now, disaster is surely around the corner.

In his talk, The Freedom of Being Nobody, Ram Dass dives into the idea of letting go of the ego—the part of us that always needs to be somebody, that needs to control, that feeds off fear and urgency. For this eNewsletter, I’m calling it “Chicken Little,” and if left unchecked, it can run the roost of your life and business. (In past emails, I simply called it “that nagging voice in your head.”)

Let’s talk about the Chicken Little Mindset

Chicken Little thrives on chaos. It’s that voice that says, “If you don’t send that email now, you’ll lose the client!” or “If you don’t get this offer out today, everything will fall apart.” It’s a mindset rooted in fear and scarcity, convincing you that you must act immediately to avoid disaster.

The tricky part is that Chicken Little lives in a world of “what ifs” and future catastrophes. It gets your nervous system all revved up, pushing you straight into the red zone as if the bomb has already gone off. It’s like tuning into Radio Doom, where the only song on repeat is, “The sky is falling!”

How to Do You Know When Your Inner Chicken Little Mind Is Running the Roost

Here are some signs:

  • You’re in a constant state of urgency. Everything feels like it needs to happen yesterday.
  • You’re making decisions from a place of fear. You find yourself asking, “What if I fail?” instead of “What if this works?”
  • You’re stuck in analysis paralysis. You can’t move forward because you’re too busy imagining all the things that could go wrong.
  • Your nervous system is in overdrive. You feel tense, uneasy, and like you can’t catch your breath.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone and are in very good company. Cuz, the good news is that you can quiet that squawking and take back control of your Inner Chicken Little Mind and your life.

Here’s How You Can Calm Your Inner Chicken Little Mind (ICLM)

  1. Recognize the Fish in Water: Just like a fish might not realize it’s in water, you might not realize when you’re steeped in anxiety. The first step is to notice it. Say to yourself, “Ah, there’s my Chicken Little again.” Or “Oh, there’s that voice of fear of again.” Awareness of your thoughts is at the core of calming your ICLM.
  2. Breathe and Ground Yourself: Take a few deep breaths. Feel your feet on the ground. The simple act of breathing can help you shift from reaction to response, keeping your nervous system within its window of tolerance. There are several good breathing techniques that can help. See below for a link to a quick breathing guide I created for you. 🙂
  3. Get Present with What Is: Instead of getting swept away by what could be, focus on what is right now. As mindfulness teacher Terry Helbick says, “Respond to what is happening now, not what might happen later.” The ICLM thrives on what-ifs and disasters in the future.
  4. Ask, “Is This a Helpful Thought?” When ICLM is playing the Radio Doom station, you don’t have to believe every word. Pause and ask yourself, “Is this thought helping me or hurting me?” It’s a simple way to reorient yourself and see the difference between a real challenge and an imagined catastrophe. It grounds you in the present moment.
  5. Keep Your Nervous System in the Green Zone: By staying present, you’re not feeding ICLM’s fear. You’re letting your body know it’s safe right now, which keeps you better prepared for whatever may come. Breathing techniques will also help with this.

How to Move from Fear to Freedom

Ram Dass talks about the freedom of being nobody—letting go of the need to be seen, to achieve, or to constantly do. When you quiet your ICLM, you find a sense of peace and freedom. You’re no longer chasing after every shiny object or reacting to every trigger.

Instead, you’re able to act from a place of purpose and alignment.

It’s about reorienting yourself to recognize the difference between future catastrophes and what is actually happening in the present moment.

When you catastrophize what WILL happen, you are creating suffering in the now because it’s not your reality…

Being in the moment trains you to recognize and ask yourself, “Is this a helpful thought right now?” Ummmm nope, I’m not gonna listen to you, Chicken Little. I’m gonna focus on something else….

Imagine making decisions not because you’re afraid of what will happen if you don’t make them but because you’re inspired by what could happen if you do. Instead of saying, “My business struggles to get new dream clients and create success…” Shift it to “My business easily finds new dream clients and is always creating success for me?!”

That’s the shift you need to move to the next phase of looking at your marketing—going from fear-based to soulful marketing. That’s when your message, your offers, and your business start to truly resonate—with your dream clients. And that’s because it also aligns deeply with your mission and values.

The beauty of this is that “the sky is definitely not falling.” At least not right here and right now, which is in this moment you’re reading this. You’re breathing, maybe even smiling, or drinking your favorite beverage.

Most importantly, you are in this present moment—exactly where you need to be. From this place of calm and clarity, you can make the kind of impact you’re here to make.

And as always, yes, my hands are always at your back for whatever you need.

Paragraph I’m Pondering

In case you haven’t noticed, you have a mental dialogue going on inside your head that never stops. It just keeps going and going. Have you ever wondered why it talks in there? How does it decide what to say and when to say it? How much of what it says turns out to be true? How much of what it says is even important? And if right now you are hearing, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t have any voice inside my head!”—that’s the voice we’re talking about. There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of the mind—you are the one who hears it. If you don’t understand this, you will try to figure out which of the many things the voice says is really you. People go through so many changes in the name of “trying to find myself.” They want to discover which of these voices, which of these aspects of their personality, is who they really are. The answer is simple: none of them. ~Michael Singer, The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Self
