I read something this weekend that I can’t stop thinking about

I know my emails have been different lately. My focus has been more on the first M of Soulful Marketing, Mindset, and honestly, that’s where my writing has been coming from these past several weeks. (The 3 M’s are Mindset, Messaging, and Marketing.)

This past weekend, I stumbled upon an interesting New York Times article called, “How Far Would You Go to Learn From Werner Herzog?” It’s not something I’d normally read. I was drawn in by the visuals of filmmakers on this island, and the more I read, the more curious and intrigued I became.

At one point, the heart of the workshop was summed up like this: “Take your camera, get the shot, forgo storyboards, don’t overdo it, and, above all else, do the doable.”

Do the doable. That line stayed with me. Maybe because life has felt anything but “doable” or simple lately.

Saying goodbye to my mom was huge. Then right behind that came all the institutions I had to call, all the paperwork, the death certificates, the questions, the calls, the details, the information. Eek. Death is not simple on so many levels.

So when I read that phrase, I grabbed onto it. Do the doable.

It sounds so simple, especially when we live in a world of such complexity. Yet maybe that’s exactly why it matters.

The article talked about how these filmmakers had only a short time to create their films, and they had to deal with real conditions like animals, weather, timing, and whatever else came up. One filmmaker wanted to get a cow to walk into a church.

Herzog’s point wasn’t about doing something grand and impossible. It was about dealing with what was real and figuring out what could actually be done. That really got me.

Because when I look back at the last couple of weeks, that’s exactly how I made many of my last-minute decisions to go see my mom before she died. I knew it was possible. Not easy or painless. Yet possible.

No weather issues. Just TSA, timing, and the cost of the plane ticket. And somehow it all lined up. I was able to book the ticket; it wasn’t a crazy price, there were no long TSA lines, and I even got there early.

When I think about it now, what I was really doing was taking something complex and bringing it down to its most basic elements. What are the factors? What matters most? What is actually possible right now?

That was the lesson for me.

Because when I knew all the factors that were part of my decision, I could distill them down to the most basic elements, and that’s when it all worked out. (I also think there might have been some unseen help from the Universe or the beyond.)

Maybe that’s the real question for you and me when something feels bigger, more tangled, or more overwhelming than we want it to feel.

Instead of trying to solve every part of it, what if we simply asked, ” What’s actually doable here right now?”

I think there is something powerful about taking the complex and bringing it back down to what is true, what matters most, and what is possible in this moment.

Because sometimes that is how you make the most informed decision. You take the complex and simplify it into its basic elements, and from there, you can move forward without carrying the weight of everything at once.

Whatever is on your mind today and taking up too much space, let it go as best as you can and just focus on what’s doable for you.

And thank you for all your kind, heartfelt messages last week about the loss of my mom. I very much appreciate you.

Hands at Your Back.

Always,
Shannon

Quote I’m Pondering

Weekly Photos

  1. I do love our little airport with one gate here in Redding, CA. Especially when you’re on the early flight and get to see the sun rise over Mt. Shasta.
  2. This was a pic I got on the way back from Houston. There was a big storm when we were landing back home, and some cool shots of the rain and dark clouds.
  3. The sun rising this time of the year can be pretty breathtaking with all the clouds.
  4. Ruby, my favorite dog, is the one I hang out with when her mom works 12-hour shifts at the hospital. This day, her mom found out about the loss of my mom and brought Ruby over cuz she knew I needed some puppy TLC in those first few days. She also brought me coffee and some flowers. What’s not to love about neighbors who bring their dog to hang out and also bring coffee and flowers too?! I’m incredibly grateful.
  5. Oh my gosh, soooo many butterflies, pretty darn crazy here. More so I think than usual. I want to think that my mom’s love of butterflies and her watching over me sent a bunch my way. This was the only one that didn’t fly away when I got close. She just hung out there and let me take as many pics as I wanted.
  6. One of my favorite parts of the Sacramento trail hike. There’s this wonderful labyrinth there. I may have talked about this before. It’s so healing to walk it and read what’s written on the rocks.
  7. Spring is truly in its essence this week. I love how the flowers are so yellow and contrast with the red of the barn and the dark, stormy clouds looming.
