A Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Note: Steak, Stuffing, and Self-Celebration

Happy Turkey Day to those who celebrate! Gobble, Gobble.

I need to be honest—I haven’t had turkey in years. It is not my favorite. It’s just an excuse to cook up a nice steak with mashed potatoes, stuffin muffins, and an apple pie! Are you with me?!

So, as you know, This is the one day of the year that many people focus on gratefulness.

That’s why I went to veer a little, of course…

I wanted to reveal something to you that I don’t think I’ve shared before—how I have an amazing therapist I’ve been working with for years. There was a time when I had a coach, a therapist, and a bodyworker. LOL.

These days, I find my therapist can be more like a coach, with other benefits. The honest truth is I’m just obsessed with learning, growing, and changing. I don’t want to be the same person I am today that I was a year ago.

I want to see things with a different lens. And I’m just as obsessed with unlearning as I am with learning and rethinking any old beliefs, thought distortions, and stereotypes I’m carrying around as I am with learning. (This week, I’ve been listening to Adam Grant’s Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know, which has stirred up some interesting stuff too.)

I want to explore and be more aware, present, in the moment, and work through my emotions and not take them out on others, myself, and on and on my journey continues…

That was a long preamble to say…

One of the best things I’ve learned in therapy is how I don’t recognize myself for the small moments of progress. I’m not my best cheerleader.

My therapist reminded me yesterday that I need to give myself many more “attagirls.” She was even getting me to pat myself on the shoulders and give myself encouragement for working through some struggles I’ve been having with my 85-year-old Mom.

I, of course, laughed; I know this… yet I forget, and I don’t do it!

Hence, I’m sharing this with you today on Thanksgiving.

It’s time—right now—to stop—and pat yourself on the back, shoulder, or chest and say to yourself, “Wow, I’m so proud of all you’ve accomplished today! Dealing with -(Insert yours here), family, bills, kids, stresses of work, and more. Just for today, I want you to know how much I love and appreciate you always…” OR say something else that feels right for you in that moment.

I know it might feel kind of weird. Just go for it. If you want to step it up a notch, do it in front of a mirror and really look at yourself while saying it.

I know it might be a bridge too far today. And if it is—That’s ok, you’ve got tomorrow or the next day. 🙂

I didn’t want today to go by and do the usual gratefulness journey. I wanted this to be about you.

I see you, and I know all the work you’re doing on yourself, your business, relationships, and more.

Remember, you’re not ever alone.

My hands are always at your back.

I hope you and your loved ones have a sweet and memorable holiday weekend. 🙂

Paragraph I’m Pondering

“Humility is often misunderstood. It’s not a matter of having low self-confidence. One of the Latin roots of humility means “from the earth.” It’s about being grounded—recognizing that we’re flawed and fallible. Confidence is a measure of how much you believe in yourself. Evidence shows that’s distinct from how much you believe in your methods. You can be confident in your ability to achieve a goal in the future while maintaining the humility to question whether you have the right tools in the present. That’s the sweet spot of confidence.” ~ Adam M. Grant, Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know

Powerful Affirmations to Inspire

  • “I am deeply thankful for the abundant gifts and opportunities in my life, both seen and unseen, knowing that gratitude opens the door to even greater joy and fulfillment.”
  • I cherish the love, connection, and opportunities that surround me today and every day.”
  • “Gratitude flows effortlessly through me, transforming every moment into a celebration of the abundance in my life.”

Book ReviewToday It’s a Blog Review—

It’s a different kind of gratefulness journey – If you’re up for it, it might be a good first or second read. (I wrote this back on March 7, 2024.) It’s a fresh take on gratitude that’s powerfully shifted my perspective. Inspired by Melody Beattie, I’ve learned how embracing life’s challenges—yes, even the messy, frustrating parts—can open the door to deeper growth, clarity, and abundance. Ready to see your struggles in a whole new light?
