The Real Lesson Behind “Faster Horses” (And What It Means for You)

Have you ever heard this Henry Ford quote?
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

It’s one of those stories that gets tossed around to explain innovation. Whether or not Henry Ford actually said it doesn’t even matter. What matters is the lesson it holds for you – a mindful, purpose-driven entrepreneur who’s out there creating something meaningful.

Let’s unpack it together.

Your Audience Can’t Always See What’s Possible

Picture this: It’s the early 1900s. People rely on horse-drawn carriages. No one could fathom something as game-changing as the automobile. If Ford had only focused on what people thought they wanted, he’d have invested in faster, stronger horses. Yet, he didn’t. He thought beyond what was obvious – and imagined a future where transportation was faster, easier, and more accessible to everyone.

Here’s the big takeaway: Sometimes, your dream clients can’t articulate what they need because they’re stuck in their current reality.

And that’s where you come in.

As a mindful, purpose-driven entrepreneur, your job isn’t simply to meet your dream client’s surface desires – it’s to solve their deeper problems in ways they might not even know exist yet.

So, How Do You Lead with Vision?

This doesn’t mean ignoring your audience or failing to listen. It’s about listening deeper and combining that insight with your vision for change. Here are a few steps to help you think like Ford (minus the assembly line :-):

  1. Dig Below the Surface.
When your dream client says they want “X,” ask yourself: What’s the deeper problem or desire? For example:
    • If they say they need “more time,” do they really want more freedom?
    • If they say they want “more sales,” do they truly crave impact or security?
Start thinking like your favorite detective or mystery show. Go beyond what’s obvious.
  2. Dream Bigger for Them.
Ford didn’t just give people a faster way to travel – he redefined what was possible.
    Ask yourself:
    • What would complete transformation look like for my dream clients?
    • What could I offer that would change their lives, not just fix a quick problem?
  3. Your job isn’t to give them what everyone else offers – it’s to create something that aligns with their deeper dreams and your mission.
  4. Trust Your Intuition.
Look, you’re not just any entrepreneur. You’re purpose-driven. That means you’ve got an inner compass guiding you toward what will truly make a difference. Trust that even when people can’t see it yet.

Innovating requires courage. Whether it’s a new course, product, or approach, the first step is believing in your own vision – because someone out there needs it.
  5. Test and Learn.
Ford didn’t invent the car; he perfected the way it was delivered to people. Your innovation doesn’t have to be earth-shattering – it just has to be soulful and effective. Take small steps, get feedback, and adjust as you go.

A Soulful Challenge for You

Here’s your invitation: Stop trying to build “faster horses.” Instead, ask yourself:

  • What’s the transformation my dream clients truly need?
  • How can I think bigger and lead them to a new solution they haven’t even imagined yet?

You don’t have to have all the answers right away. Just start asking the right questions. Dream a little bigger for yourself and your people.

The best part? When you create from a place of alignment, trust, and vision, the people who need you most will recognize it.

You’ve Got This.
Your purpose, your ideas, and your business can change lives
– and you’ve got to go deeper than “faster horses.” Trust your intuition, lead with your mission, and know that the solutions you’re creating will resonate deeply when you’re aligned with what truly matters.

What’s the one “automobile” you’re dreaming up right now?

If you’re ready to think bigger and take that next step, hit reply. I’d love to share my new program with you. And if that’s too forward—I will be sharing more in the next few days about it.

Drop your thoughts or questions below – I’d love to hear where you’re headed.

On A More Somber Note:
I’m hoping you’re having a good week. And my heart goes out to anyone here who lives in Southern CA. What a traumatic week it’s been. I was just thrilled that our town and several from Oregon to Nevada and Mexico have sent their fire trucks, firefighters, and planes to help put out the fires.

This is who we are. We cross borders, set aside what makes us different, and connect on this simple truth—we’re all human, flesh and blood, with more in common than we realize. In moments like these, we let go of biases, reach across the aisle, and offer our hand. Because that’s what we do, it’s loving kindness in its purest form.

The only sad thing is when it has to take a tragedy of this proportion to come down to the basics of human kindness.

Yet, if you’re reading this, I know that’s not you. You don’t need a tragedy to reach across the aisle to help someone, no matter their beliefs, who they voted for, who they’re married to, or the color of their skin…

Big hugs to you, and thank you for being here!

Paragraph I’m Pondering

–I love this paragraph; it’s so the definition of being authentic and what I teach and guide entrepreneurs about what Soulful Marketing is about. I so resonate with Vanessa Van Edwards and her science backed framework to improve interpersonal communications and leadership skills. Recently, I listened to a podcast she was on. And her other book, Cues: Small Signals, Incredible Impact. (More to come!)] And her TEDx Talk.–

“When you try to be the same as everyone else, it’s boring. When you try to fit into a mold, you become forgettable. When you try to be “normal,” you become dull. Just be yourself because no one is like you. If you’re a little weird, own it. The right people will like you for it.”
~ Vanessa Van Edwards, Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People

Powerful Affirmations to Inspire

  • “My influence and leadership skills grow stronger every day.”
  • “I am in harmony with the vibration of wealth and abundance.”
  • “I am building a legacy of impact, integrity, and innovation that will inspire future generations of entrepreneurs.”

Book Review

This is the second week of the New Year, and I’m thinking we need some inspiration from Outrageous Openness: Letting The Divine Take The Lead by Tosha Silver

Cool Stuff

  • The history of Taylor Swift explained, in case you were curious about her timeline of how she came to be the Taylor who sold out every concert and broke every record for money made and attendance. 🙂 (This is a video and it’s about 3:40.)
  • Curious about what the most on-time airline and airport is? This might surprise you.
  • Why do humans really have toenails? Hmmmm not something that keeps me up at night. And yeah, it’s definitely some clickbait. 😉 (Nothing will happen to you when you click this promise. It’s just an article. Go ahead, click it. I know you want to 😉 I did! That’s how it got here.)

Weekly Photos

  1. Here’s a terrific pic of what we call “Emma TV.” Now that the Christmas tree is gone and she’s got her new bed, she lays up there watching (and barking) at all the neighbors and their dogs most days.
  2. I found my first dime of 2025 on my walk yesterday. Yep, this neighborhood sure does deliver lots of dimes, pennies, and quarters, I am grateful.
  3. While I’m hiking with Emma, I never know what I will find when I happen to look down. Last weekend, it was this heart within a heart. Can you see it? 🙂
  4. There she is – Mt. Shasta with a ton of snow. She’s all dressed for the winter!
  5. This dog… she needs no excuse for her napping all day. And guess what, never do you! When you’re tired, just rest your eyes a bit.
  6. This was pretty cute. Harley, our neighbor’s dog, frequently comes to visit and hang out with Emma. He’s a Labradoodle and can teach Emma a thing or too about manners.
  7. This, believe it or not, was the full moon this week. It was so bright it almost looked like the sun.
